Never forget a thing again! Use this ultimate summer holiday packing list with a free printable to pack your check-in luggage and carry-on like a pro.

Okay, can I share something my friend told me that genuinely changed the way I pack for every single holiday? She swears by this little trick: before you close that suitcase, run your hands over your body — head to toe. Starting at the top, think cap, sunglasses, hair ties, all the way down to your ankles and feet, like socks and shoes. It sounds a little silly, but trust me, it WORKS. No more arriving at your destination and realising you forgot your flip-flops, your SPF, or — the horror — your toothbrush.
If you are anything like me, summer holidays are both exciting and a little overwhelming when it comes to packing. You want to pack light, but you also want to pack everything. So today I am sharing my go-to summer holiday packing list — covering your full check-in luggage AND your carry-on bag — so you can head to the airport feeling calm, organised, and completely ready to enjoy your trip. I even put together a free Canva printable at the end so you can download it, print it off, and tick everything off before you zip up that suitcase. You are welcome!
Why a Packing List Actually Matters
Let me be honest — I used to be the person who threw everything into a bag the night before a flight and hoped for the best. The result? Forgotten medicine, three pairs of the same shoes, and absolutely zero socks. Since I started using a structured packing list, not only do I pack better, but I actually feel calmer at the airport because I know I have everything.
So let us get into it!

Part 1: The Full Check-In Luggage Packing List
This list covers everything you need for a full summer holiday — whether you are heading to a beach resort, a city break, or a countryside retreat. I have organised it into six easy categories: clothing, shoes, toiletries, medicines, accessories, and miscellaneous must-haves — so nothing slips through the cracks.
Rather than writing out the entire list here (we could be here all day!), I put together a beautiful free printable that covers every single item, neatly laid out and ready for you to tick off. Think of it as your personal holiday checklist that lives in your bag, on your fridge, or on your phone — wherever works best for you.

Pro tip: Roll your clothes instead of folding them — they take up less space and arrive less wrinkled. And once you are packed, head over to my post on Top 5 Travel Luggage Organization Tips to make sure everything sits perfectly inside your suitcase!
A few things I always highlight when it comes to packing smart:
- Pack one outfit per day, minus two. You will naturally re-wear things, especially on a beach holiday. Sticking to mix-and-match colours makes this so much easier.
- Do not forget your medicine and first aid kit — and I say this from very personal experience. I once went on a hike and had a terrible fall. No first aid kit, no plasters, nothing. I ended up having to cut the hike short and go hunting for a pharmacy in an unfamiliar area just to get some basic Band-Aids and medicine. It was stressful, time-consuming, and completely avoidable. Ever since that day, a small first aid kit has been a permanent fixture in my travel bag — no exceptions. Please learn from my mistake on this one! A compact first aid travel kit is the easiest way to make sure you are always covered.
- Shoes are your biggest space-stealers. Aim for three pairs maximum: walking shoes, flip-flops, and one pair for evenings out. Wear your bulkiest pair on the plane.
- Build your toiletry kit around travel sizes. These leak-proof travel bottles are a brilliant investment and keep your bag spill-free. You are welcome in advance.
Part 2: The Carry-On Bag Packing List for a Weekend Stay
If you are heading away for a short weekend trip — a city break, a quick getaway, or a long weekend — keeping it to carry-on only makes the whole experience so much smoother. No waiting at baggage claim, no risk of lost luggage, no extra fees. Just you, your bag, and the gate. Love that for us.
I have put together a separate carry-on printable that is perfectly sized for a 2–3 night stay. It covers clothing, shoes, toiletries (all 100ml cabin-friendly, of course!), tech, documents, and in-flight comfort — everything you need, nothing you do not.

Note: This list is all about what to pack. For smart ways to organise everything once it is in your bag — including which pouches and inserts actually work — my post on Top Tips to Organise Bags has you completely covered.
A couple of carry-on-specific things worth keeping in mind:
- Keep all liquids under 100ml and in a clear bag. A TSA-approved clear toiletry bag is a must — it saves so much time at security and means you are not repacking everything at the conveyor belt.
- Always pack a spare outfit in your carry-on — even if you are checking luggage in for a longer trip. If your bag gets delayed, having one clean change of clothes is an absolute lifesaver.
- Wear your bulkiest shoes and layers on the plane to free up as much bag space as possible.
Bonus Packing Tips to Make Your Life Easier
Before I wrap up, here are a few extra tips that have made a real difference to how I pack — and how I actually feel when I arrive:
1. Start your packing list two weeks before you travel. It sounds excessive, but the moment you think of something you need, you add it. No more last-minute panic buying at the airport.
2. Lay everything out before it goes in the bag. Spread it all on your bed first. You will almost always realise you have way too many tops and not enough of the things you actually need.
3. Wear your heaviest items on the plane. Jeans, boots, a chunky cardigan — anything that takes up a lot of suitcase space should go on your body, not in your bag.
4. Pack a complete spare outfit in your carry-on. Even if you are checking your main bag in, always keep one change of clothes in your hand luggage. If your bag gets delayed, you will be so glad you did.
5. Keep a dedicated travel toiletry pouch — always packed and ready to go. This is one of my favourite habits and honestly one of the best things I ever did for my packing routine. I have a small travel pouch that lives in my luggage cupboard and is always stocked with the essentials: a spare toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup remover, medicines, my first aid kit, and a few other non-negotiables. When it is time to pack, I simply grab that pouch, add it to my bag, and move on. No hunting around the bathroom, no last-minute “did I pack the…?”, no forgotten items. It saves so much time and mental energy — and it means I am never without the basics, whether I am going away for two nights or two weeks. I honestly could not recommend this system enough!
6. Use packing cubes. They are an absolute game-changer for keeping your suitcase organised throughout your trip — not just when you pack, but the whole holiday. Everything has a place, and you can actually find things. Trust me on this one.
7. Leave a little room in your suitcase. You are almost certainly going to buy something! Whether it is a local souvenir, a bottle of olive oil, or a gorgeous scarf from a market, a little buffer space in your bag goes a long way.
8. Take a photo of your packed suitcase before you leave. If your bag gets lost, having a photo makes it SO much easier to describe the contents to the airline. It takes five seconds and it is genuinely useful.

Final Thoughts
Packing for a holiday does not have to be stressful. With the right list, a bit of planning, and the head-to-toe trick my friend swears by, you can pack confidently and actually enjoy the process. I hope this summer holiday packing list saves you time, space, and a whole lot of last-minute stress!
Grab your free printable, share it with a friend who always forgets the essentials, and get ready for the most organised holiday you have ever had. Happy travels! ✈️
